The Olvi brewery and soft drink factory have produced enjoyable beverages for nearly 140 years. Nearly 160 million liters of beer, cider, long drinks, soft drinks, snack drinks and energy drinks are sent out to customers every year. When counting both Olvi’s own brands and contract manufacturing products, the total number of products manufactured by Olvi is about 330.
Olvi wanted to streamline the operation of their filling department and started using ARROW Machine Track at the end of 2012. The switch into the new system was carried out step by step. Currently, there are about 70 machines connected to Machine Track. In addition to filling lines, machine efficiency is monitored in the brewery, warehouse and collecting work.
The system tells how much of the time the machines have been active and how much time has been spent sorting out congested production, setting changes required due to switching the product and machinery malfunctions. This data provides essential support for planning development projects and investments. ”For example, we have been able to improve the efficiency of our second canning line by 15 % within a year, by using Machine Track to identify the main issues”, says production manager Lauri Multanen.
Olvi has considered the benefits of Machine Track to be so major that the decision has been made to start using it in Olvi’s four affiliated companies in the Baltic countries and Belarus. In Iisalmi, the next step is already being prepared – they intend to switch to the Lean daily management system by organizing quick stand-up meetings right in the middle of the production facilities.
The ARROW Shop Floor Manager system will collect data from Olvi’s various systems in real time and compile a simple visual representation on a large display. The plan is to use the shop floor management tool to make the management as transparent as possible. Simultaneously, the aim is to get the personnel to take part in developing the production according to the Lean Management principles. ”At Olvi, we want to use modern, participatory management models. We use Machine Track and Shop Floor Managemer to help both materials and information flow more freely”, says production manager Lauri Multanen.
